Most of my friends and family members have some kind of a hobby interest. Knowing this I make it a habit to give a magazine gift subscription that goes along with their hobby. So far everyone had been really happy to receive the magazines I have sent them. It also does a good job of keeping them thinking of me, the one who sent the free subscription. I kind of like that idea too. It is a really good way to keep in touch with people you like a lot. It also tells them that you pay attention to what their hobbies are.
